A story about a lobster

May 14, 2008

A few years back, I found myself forced to make decisions I had not anticipated. A very good friend of mine told me this story about lobsters (which is true), and I find it applicable to my current situation . . .

Lobsters, like most other creatures, begin their lives much smaller. And, although I personally never gave much thought to the subject before, it seems that their shells do not actually grow with them. So as their lives progress, they sometimes find themselves in a "tight" situation - pun intended! At this point, the lobster finds a safe haven and then sheds his shell. Although he is extremely vulnerable when thusly exposed, he has no choice in the matter. He must do this periodically throughout his life so that he may grow to his full potential.

Our lives parallel that of the lobster. While we often prefer to be able to plan everything well in advance and be "in control" of our destinies, just as often certain circumstances force us to jump into things off schedule. Even Criss, who plans out his performances painstakingly - in his case, I would say that he makes the plans, sheds his shell and performs exposed. And this just may be the best way to attack life - to plan the best you can, but be ready for any and everything.

Okay, so why have I gone philosophical on you? Easy answer - there is a very strong possibility that my entire department will be getting axed tomorrow. Not that we've done anything wrong, mind you. Our company is just "reorganizing and streamlining". One of my coworkers is very worried about losing her job. She can see only the negatives about it. I do understand the cons of it, but I prefer to focus on the pros! You may recall, I am planning to move to Vegas anyway. I was aspiring for a late summer move (when my son is going back to school), but I can and will go earlier if things go down the way it looks. Of course, it is all speculation right now, so I will wait and see. Truly, I am so excited to be heading west that I just can't be brought down by the whole mess. (Besides, it's not like we haven't seen it coming!)

So, now I will be the lobster again. Shed my shell, expose myself (oh, that sounds so wrong) , and grow into my new future in Vegas. Woo-hoo!! Let's celebrate!
